Amino acids also play a role a key role in metabolic processes – carry oxygen throughout the body, transport nutrients and support the functioning of the immune system. Insufficiently varied amino acids or too little of them in the diet can even affect the dog’s mood and cause behavioral changes.

What influences the digestibility of protein in food?

Each protein source has a specific one biological value. For example, the biological value of eggs is 100 (maximum), chicken 79, fish 76, and beef 75. This means that eggs are one of the best digestible sources of protein for a dog.
For comparison, rice has a biological value of 59, lentils 50, and wheat flour 41. Proteins of animal origin have a great advantage over proteins of plant origin. This is mainly why dog food with a high meat content is a better choice than one that is high in carbohydrates.
At the same time, it is worth remembering that meat processing, including cooking, changes the shape and structure of proteins. This also has a negative impact on their digestibility. It is even suspected that a high degree of processing may cause low tolerance or allergy to a given type of meat.
