It has been the specialized news medium Patently Apple who has echoed the registered document. The name of the patent is “Image Capture Systems Utilizing Adjustable illumination.” When red-eye occurs in photos, it is due to the light projected by the flash system.

Until now, all iPhone cameras have been characterized by incorporating a static flash light system, which if it directly affects the human eye, is what ends up causing the red-eye effect. But what happens if we play with the flash so it can adapt? Lighting is the key in many cases to obtain optimal results. And that is precisely where they can intervene to correct the defect.

Apple's new system to eliminate red eyes

In the images they share of the document, a new layout of the flash system is observed. Now we would find a phone that would have an entire flash module, which would be made up of the light source itself and a depth sensor.

Regarding the construction of the camera module, there is a similar layout to the one we have in the iPhone Pro model: an island with three lenses, but with the addition of the flash light and the depth sensor.

But why would this last sensor be necessary? The depth sensor of the flash module would be indicating to the iPhone the distance and position we are from the person we want to take a photo of.

Concretely, would focus on the person's face, and the position of the eyes. In this way, once the device knew the distance it was from the subject, it would adapt the flash light so that it was at the point of being able to capture the scene (and the person) but without emitting an excess of flashes that later end up resulting in in red eyes.

As a whole, the flash system would be able to determine not only the depth, but the entire area of ​​the person's eye that falls within the field of light that is surrounding the image. This way, By identifying the light surrounding the eye, the person's position and depth, a set of instructions would be created that would translate into a dynamic flash lightwhich would change depending on the environmental conditions, when taking the photo with the phone.
